Austrian Airlines Flight Suffers Lightning Strike in Klagenfurt

Earlier this week, an Austrian Airlines flight suffered a lightning strike on approach into Klagenfurt.

Information has been released pertinent to this incident, which we will go into in this report.

Earlier this week, an Austrian Airlines flight suffered a lightning strike on approach into Klagenfurt.

Austrian Airlines flight OS939, which suffered a lightning strike, is a routine scheduled flight between Vienna and Klagenfurt.

The aircraft involved in the incident is registered as OE-LWD.

As per data from Planespotters.net, OE-LWD is a 13.4 year old Embraer E195 that started out life with Lufthansa CityLine in March 2011.

By August 2015, the aircraft was transferred to Austrian Airlines.

Furthermore, of the E195 variant, OS has 17 of them in their fleet.

Of that 17, all of them are in active service, with an average fleet age of 12.8 years.

Austrian Airlines flight OS939 departed Vienna at 1312 local time on June 3, and proceeded on a south-westerly track to Klagenfurt.

As per The Aviation Herald, during it’s approach into the destination, the aircraft sustained a lightning strike.

Furthermore, it is understood that the aircraft continued for a safe landing following the strike at 1344 local time.

Furthermore, the safety outlet reports that the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected.

However, the aircraft returned to commercial service the next day, as per data from RadarBox.com.

Since the incident, it has operated flights to the following destinations:

  • Prague
  • Sibiu
  • Kalamata
  • Warsaw
  • Lyon
  • Graz

Overall, no additional incidents have been reported regarding the Embraer E195, and has been flying normally since.
