The Government of Canada has inked a Foreign Military Sales Letter of Offer and Acceptance for the acquisition of up to 16 Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft.
This development marks Canada’s entry into the group of defense partners involved in the Canadian Multi-Mission Aircraft (CMMA) project.
Notably, the decision positions Canada as the fifth NATO nation to select the P-8 aircraft, joining the ranks of key FIVE EYES allies: the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
P-8A Poseidon
The P-8A Poseidon stands as the sole proven, in-service, and in-production solution that suitably aligns with all CMMA requirements.
From range and speed to endurance and payload capacity, the P-8 exceeds expectations, making it the ideal choice for bolstering Canada’s defense capability and readiness.

Heidi Grant, President of Business Development for Boeing Defense, Space & Security, expresses anticipation, emphasizing the positive impact on the Royal Canadian Air Force.
“The P-8 will bolster Canada’s defense capability and readiness, and we look forward to delivering this capability to the Royal Canadian Air Force,” Grant said.

Economic Boost and Job Creation
Undoubtedly, the P-8 acquisition will not only fortify Canada’s defense but also contribute significantly to its economic landscape.
An independent study conducted by Ottawa-based Doyletech Corporation in 2023 estimates that the acquisition will generate nearly 3,000 jobs and an annual economic output of $358 million.
This injection of economic vitality is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between national security and prosperity.
Industrial and Tech Benefits Package
Boeing, in collaboration with its Canadian partners, pledges to deliver a robust industrial and technological benefits package. This commitment ensures the continuous prosperity of Canada’s aerospace and defense industry.
Charles “Duff” Sullivan, Managing Director of Boeing Canada, highlights the P-8 as the most affordable solution, saying:
“The P-8 offers unmatched capabilities and is the most affordable solution for acquisition and life-cycle sustainment costs. There’s no doubt the P-8 will protect Canada’s oceans and its borders for future generations.”
Team Poseidon
At the heart of Boeing’s P-8 Canadian industry partnership is Team Poseidon, a formidable alliance comprising CAE, GE Aviation Canada, IMP Aerospace & Defence, KF Aerospace, Honeywell Aerospace Canada, Raytheon Canada, and StandardAero.
This collaboration builds upon the existing network of 81 Canadian suppliers to the P-8 platform and over 550 Boeing suppliers across provinces.
The result? An annual economic benefit of approximately CAD $4 billion, supporting more than 14,000 Canadian jobs.
Summary
With over 160 aircraft delivered or in service and an impressive 560,000 collective flight-hours, the P-8 has demonstrated its prowess in anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief response.
This proven track record solidifies the P-8A Poseidon as not just a military asset but a versatile tool for multifaceted operational needs.
