Polls begin closing as Trump and Haley face off in Republican election

Polls have begun closing in the New Hampshire primary, where voters are making their voices heard in the Republican race pitting former President Donald Trump against his sole remaining rival, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Polling stations in many jurisdictions closed at 7 p.m. ET, but others will stay open until 8 p.m. Voters who are in line when the polls close will still be allowed to vote. CBS News will not characterize the race until all polls in the state have closed.

There are 22 delegates at stake for the Republican candidates. Trump is looking to repeat his decisive victory in last week’s Iowa caucuses, while Haley is hoping to close the gap and keep her campaign afloat. Haley will likely need a strong showing in order to compete in the races to come, including her home state of South Carolina and on Super Tuesday, March 5, when 16 states and territories hold their contests.

Early exit polling of New Hampshire’s Republican voters showed a more moderate electorate than the voters who propelled Trump to victory in the Hawkeye State. About 1 in 3 voters in the GOP primary in New Hampshire described themselves as moderate, compared to about 1 in 10 in Iowa.

The exit polling showed New Hampshire Republican primary voters are unhappy with how things are going in the country. About 45% of GOP voters said they were dissatisfied with the state of the country, while 32% said they were angry.

On the Democratic side, meanwhile, President Biden is not appearing on the ballot, and no delegates will be awarded based on Tuesday’s results. The Democratic National Committee punished the state for its decision to maintain its first-in-the-nation status, since the party wanted South Carolina to go first in the 2024 Democratic cycle. The president’s reelection campaign has instead urged Democrats to write in Mr. Biden’s name. Results will be slower to come in on the Democratic side.
