A Call for Lower Taxes to Boost Regional Travel

The Caribbean, a tapestry of vibrant cultures and breathtaking landscapes, thrives on connectivity. Yet, the region’s potential for economic growth and seamless travel is often hampered by high aviation taxes.

Now, a powerful voice is rising, echoing the sentiments of many: it’s time for change.

Philippe Bayard, CEO of Sunrise Airways, recently lauded the public calls from government officials in Montserrat and Antigua & Barbuda for a reduction in airport taxes.

He firmly believes that this is a pivotal step towards stimulating regional air travel and fostering economic prosperity.

“Recent public statements by the Premier of Montserrat and the Minister of Tourism of Antigua and Barbuda advocating for reduced aviation taxes across the Caribbean should be welcomed with widespread support and enthusiasm by all who prioritize the region’s long-term economic growth and connectivity,” Bayard stated.

Sunrise Airways, a regional carrier dedicated to connecting the West Indies, has long championed the idea that lowering aviation taxes is a strategic investment.

This move, they argue, will trigger a cascade of positive effects. Increased flight frequencies, a surge in passenger movement, and a fortified regional economy are just the beginning.

The Economic Ripple Effect

Aviation serves as a crucial engine for economic development in the Caribbean. By reducing taxes, governments can directly contribute to GDP growth across diverse sectors. This creates a “win-win” scenario, benefiting travelers, businesses, and governments alike.

Bayard specifically commended The Honorable Reuben Meade, Premier of Montserrat, and The Honorable Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Investment, and Economic Development for Antigua and Barbuda, for their leadership.

He saw their views as supportive of a stronger and more unified Caribbean region.

“We commend The Honorable Reuben Meade, Premier of Montserrat, and The Honorable Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Investment, and Economic Development for Antigua and Barbuda, for their leadership in championing this critical issue.”

“Their advocacy aligns with the shared vision of a more connected, prosperous, and unified Caribbean. One Caribbean moving forward,” Bayard emphasized.

Sunrise Airways: Bridging the Islands

Sunrise Airways, with its headquarters and Service Oversight Center (SOC) at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is at the forefront of this regional connectivity. The privately-owned airline is led by Chairman and CEO Philippe Bayard. He is a respected Haitian businessman, philanthropist, and pilot and strongly committed to linking the West Indies.

The carrier’s expanding route network spans the Caribbean, extending to Miami in the United States and Panama in Central America.

The airline’s recent launch of new flights serving gateways throughout the Eastern Caribbean in 2024 further underscores their dedication to enhancing regional travel.

Caribbean Travel: A Call to Action

The call for reduced aviation taxes seems to be something of a strategic imperative to better support Caribbean travel.

By embracing this change, Caribbean nations can unlock their full potential, fostering a more vibrant and interconnected region. The time for action is now, for a stronger, more accessible Caribbean.
