Medical Entrance Exam: NEET-UG 2024 registrations surpass 25-lakh mark

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Exam (NEET-UG) registration for 2024 has exceeded 25 lakh, marking a substantial increase of 4.2 lakh compared to the previous year. Despite the deadline for registration closing on Saturday for the medical entrance examination scheduled for May 5, a significant number of students continued to register, prompting some to request an extension due to challenges related to Aadhaar card and mobile link issues.

Parijat Mishra, a career counseling expert at Allen Career Institute, told TOI, that many students faced difficulties in registering due to issues with Aadhaar card verification and mobile OTPs. The demand for an extension arose as some students could not apply within the given timeframe.

Of the 25 lakh registrations, over 13 lakh applications have been submitted by female candidates competing for approximately 2 lakh seats, including 1.09 lakh MBBS, 26,000 dental, and various other medical disciplines such as Unani, Homeopathy, Veterinary, Ayurveda, and nursing seats.

The field of medicine is considered one of the highest paying in India, with the national average salary for an MBBS doctor ranging from Rs 9-10 lakh per annum. Postgraduate specializations further enhance earning potential, contributing to increased income and social prestige. Job security is also a significant factor, with the doctor-patient ratio in India currently at 1:834. The country still requires an additional 5 lakh doctors to meet the World Health Organization’s standards.
